She imagined their worry shrouded over them in the air like the gray cloud of smoke. Libby watched for a long time as they talked, so quiet she couldn’t make out what they said. Mom walked over, slipped her hand in his, and sat in the chair next to him. Her curly brown hair was neatly tucked under a red handkerchief. She wore her brown-checked house dress and yellow apron. Mom turned off the radio and leaned against the sink, her arms folded in front of her. Sorry folks, like I said, the drought continues." We need rain if we’re gonna get more’n a dozen bales out of that field.Ī voice from the radio on the counter announced, "Expect temperatures in the nineties by this afternoon, and those temperatures are staying with us for the next few days, at least. Libby snuck down to the bottom of the steps and leaned around the corner.ĭad sat at the kitchen table. Across the room, Libby’s big sister Patricia, who had just turned nine, sprawled with her arms and legs touching every quadrant of the bed in her usual sound asleep position. Libby eased out of bed, careful not to wake four-year-old Beth, whose thumb poised on her moist bottom lip as if she had just removed it. Dad’s words from downstairs, were followed by Mom’s, Shh, honey. Already the heat and humidity felt thick in the room.ĭammit. Tiny pinpoints of sunshine pierced through holes in the window shade. She sat up, fully awake, as the dream’s desperate feelings still churned inside. Breathy moans come from her as she crouches down again and again, trying to fill her hands with water for the thirsty animals. Their massive black and white bodies crowd around the water tank to get to her and their tongues push toward her. She cups her hands and rises to offer the precious wetness to the cows. Libby squats down in the tank and tries to scoop water from small puddles at the bottom. As the herd comes toward her, their plaintive mooing gets louder and louder. In the dream, she is in the cow’s empty water tank. Her heart beat with a strange urgency and she made herself lie still to let the images materialize. Libby startled awake from a dream that swirled just out of reach. The secret will not be ignored or lost or forgotten or killed. It swells behind the silence of your not telling. It seeps out in the dampness under your arms and down your back. It is there in the quickening of your heartbeat. It appears in the turn of chin, flutter of eyelid, clearing of throat, tenor of voice. It moves through conversations without a sound. It floats around you like a breath, an invisible presence, penetrating every corner of every room you are in. The secret lies in the shadows where you think no one can see. The secret seeps into your dreams and wakes you gasping for air. You can’t keep a secret, even though you never tell it, even though you have no words to tell it. With whom I shared my passion for writing and creating. And she learns, even though her sisters did not know the secret, their lives, too, were changed by it.Ī Land No Map Can Find is told from the lens of a child as she grows into adulthood, in a struggle against the destructive behaviors of adults, and the consequences of their actions. It is decades later when Libby experiences panic attacks which threaten to unhinge her, that the awful memories come back. Libby witnesses the tragedy, and in her six-year-old mind, mixes what is real and imagined, until the true memory is repressed. For years she believed the flood caused the terrible rift that came between Mom and Dad, for the way her mom grew silent and pushed them all away, and for the anger and sadness that tore her dad apart.īut there is another reason, a betrayal and an act of rage with consequences so devastating, it must be kept secret. Libby wanted to blame the flood that came and stayed until all hope for replanting was lost, drowned their milk cows, and altered the landscape beyond recognition. The secret will not be ignored or lost or forgotten.

Renton steals the ARQ and some scrips from Torus and brings it to his hideout. Perhaps they knew it would work, although their intention was not to use it to provide the world with energy but to use it as a war machine. Torus shuts down the project because they believe it would never work. In effect, the machine would be the solution to their energy crisis. A perpetual motion machine is one that that can keep running without any external supply of energy. Renton was building a perpetual motion machine called the ARQ (Arcing Recursive Quine). Years ago Renton (Robbie) and Hannah (Rachael) were lovers and used to work for Torus. The Bloc is a rebel group that wants to bring down Torus. Torus Corporation is an evil empire that has dominated over the rest. The story is set in a dystopian future where the world is polluted and the air is no longer suitable to breathe. For the sake of easy understanding, I’m going to give away most of the key elements right in the beginning. There is a lot of the plot that is revealed to the viewers over the course of the movie. – How does the timeloop begin and how many loops have been there?Īs, always, let’s start at the top.It may be uneconomical in the short term, but hopefully beneficial in the long term. Here are links to the key aspects of the movie: So I can't see it happening.īottom line is I think for Arq to be sustainable long term, Stefan probably needs to think through about expanding the ownership of Arq and bringing in other key people who can take up the mantle of developing it further. He would have to build a forum and maintain it. The problem with that concept is it creates more work. I think if there were to be support forums where he was to engage, it shouldn't be on reddit, it should be on a forum under his control and he has the right to censor, delete, remove any posts he wishes. But reddit is a turd of a place full of hatred, self entitled people who feel that they can use this medium to engage anyone anyway they like. It makes me sad for Stefan, because his ultimate joy comes from writing a great product that people love to use. I still use it (as I love it) but I am pondering the entire proposition given the above. I've bought a lifetime license, so I presume whether I use Arq or not is immaterial to Stefan. What worries me is Stefan himself, concern for his own wellbeing, and also the volatility of whether Arq continues as a supportable product given that without Stefan there would be no Arq. I totally support his position and don't think he should come back as it has happened time and time again. It is built and maintained by one key person (Stefan) who is (fair enough) suffering mental health issues that prevent him from contributing on reddit. My concern is this highlights the vulnerability of using Arq (which I do and love the product). He's a software developer, not a social media manager. I mean, it would be great to have occasional engagement from him here, but meh, that's not really his job. Personally I'm just as happy if Stefan hangs out in X-Code cranking out great updates rather than arguing with a bunch of redditors here. But if it comes from the company itself, it can't break his user's privacy (even if the user is flat-out lying, he can't necessarily contradict him), every nugget of info he posts will be used against him later if the development timeline/feature set/whatever has to be changed. I can thoughtlessly post whatever the hell I want and there are no consequences for me. He (the developer) is not on equal footing with the rest of us here. You can't expect a lead developer of a product to hang out in an environment like that. But just replying to every post telling people that the product sucks and to stay away from it as this user does? That's not acceptable. My guess is that we may convince the developer to join again and at least engage with announcements or general technical posts.Ĭoncern yes, disgust if it's specific and constructive sure. I would appreciate any idea you have about this. Otherwise we would be entering censorship territory, and that wouldn't benefit the community. While I think deleting harassing and offensive posts/comment is good, posts and comment by vocal people expressing concern or even disgust for the product should be allowed, if polite and appropriate. Important: There are already rules against spam and offensive behavior. I think it was a mistake, since even a little presence from the developer is greatly appreciated, and by being here, his business would benefit from having a Reddit presence, since he could ignore non constructive criticism and engage when appropriate. The developer himself deleted the Reddit account after a lengthy conversation with a unhappy user that wore him out, it was the last straw. This means even less is in contact with the filament as it passes through. This also means that 21% of the 0.045 grams of lead were removed as well, leaving a total number of 0.035 grams of lead remaining in the TOTAL nozzle. Now, 21% (0.63 grams) of a 3 gram standard 0.4mm nozzle is removed for the filament to flow into as indicated by the photo below. In no time, you will have cleared most of the slime."ġ.5% of 3 grams is 0.045 grams of lead. It’s very simple to use baking soda for this indication you only need to wet a rag, put a bit of the baking soda in it and then scrub away. The rough particles in the baking soda will dislodge any biofilm from the plumbing surfaces, while the basic pH will also help in chemically removing most of the waste. This is on account of the fact that it works by both chemical and physical means. " Baking soda makes an excellent cleaning agent when you need to get rid of biofilm. Below are some sources about baking soda and biofilms: Baking soda is abrasive enough and is a base rather than an acid. However, i have found that scrubbing with baking soda and soapy water works well to remove biofilms from dishes and plastics. I am still conducting tests on these possible issues. These biofilms can form if you do not wash the parts or even household items within a day or so. These films are like a protective blanket bacteria put over themselves. Where a potential problem could exist, is the formation of biofilms. This is a very short lifetime: light will barely cross an eye of a fine needle in the time it takes the B s meson to decay. This measurement yielded a lifetime of about 1.7 picoseconds, consistent with the SM. The interest in examining the B s ⟶ μ +μ - lifetime is that, just as for the decay rate, new physics might alter its value from the SM expectation. Moreover, CMS managed to measure the effective lifetime of the B s meson, using the several dozen B s ⟶ μ +μ - decay events that were observed. The peaks corresponding to the B s and B 0 mesons are shown by hatched histograms, while dashed lines represent the various background components. There was no sign of the B 0 ⟶ μ +μ - decay yet, but a stringent limit of less than 0.36 ppb was set on its rate.įigure 2: The reconstructed mass spectrum of the dimuon pair. The branching fraction was found to be consistent with the SM prediction, and thus no evidence for new physics was observed. This new result allowed observation of the elusive B s ⟶ μ +μ - decay with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. The first observation based on the LHC Run 1 data was presented in 2013, in a joint publication ( Nature 522 (2015) 68) by the CMS and LHCb Collaborations.Įarlier this month, the CMS Collaboration updated its 2013 analysis and added the 2016 LHC Run 2 data (collected in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions, rather than at 7 and 8 TeV of Run 1). It took over a quarter-century of extensive effort to establish the B s ⟶ μ +μ - decay. In watching a billion or more B s mesons disintegrate, one would, therefore, observe only a mere handful of these events! The B 0 meson, a lighter cousin of the B s meson, made from a down quark and a beauty antiquark, is expected to decay to a μ +μ - pair even more rarely, about once every ten billion decays. In the SM, the rate of this decay process is predicted to be only about 3.6 parts per billion (ppb). The two muons come not from the collision point (yellow dot) but form a displaced vertex of the B s meson decay. The tracks other than the muon ones have been removed for clarity. The inset zooms in on the innermost CMS detector region. The two curved red lines correspond to the two muons from the decay. The sensitivity to new physics rivals and might even exceed that of direct searches for new particles.įigure 1: An event display of a B s ⟶ μ +μ - candidate in Run 2 data. Why are searches for this rare decay so important? It is because the rate might be enhanced significantly by the presence of new particles, and this decay thereby offers excellent sensitivity to physics beyond the standard model (SM). The B s meson is a bound state of a strange quark and a beauty antiquark – as such it possesses both beauty and strangeness! For many years, searches for an extremely rare decay of the B s meson, to a μ +μ - pair, remained a holy grail of particle physics. Undoubtedly, learning the additional composite aspects of the application takes time, but the team will benefit from the training. “If good things are coming, they will be a pleasant surprise, if bad things are, and you know in advance, you will suffer greatly before they even occur.” In The Alchemist someone brings up a comment that I think often about, and it’s the objection that “maybe I just want to focus on the future so I can prepare myself for what’s coming.” And the response given is the perfect explanation of mindfulness: Even in pursuit of big dreams and goals like our personal legends, there is a continued importance on being present and in the moment. I’m a sucker for the concept of mindfulness and continue to find it showing up in my life in a variety of ways. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we’ve learned as we’ve moved toward that dream the darkest hour of the night just before the dawn.”Īnd so, in reality, there’s nothing to hold you back except yourself. “Before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It’s important to see these tests not as signs that you shouldn’t take action, but as a way of proving your commitment to your journey to fulfilling your personal legend. Where have you noticed this in your own life? When you first step into your higher self, have you seen that opportunities seem to appear where they weren’t before?Īs time goes on however, and where many get stuck, is when this apparent beginner’s luck begins to wear off and you begin to be presented with tests and obstacles. “ When you play cards the first time, you are almost sure to win… there is a force that wants you to realize your personal legend it whets your appetite with a taste of success.” Because, when you really want something, the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it, “because that desire originated in the soul of the universe.”Īt the beginning, you’ll notice this often in the form of beginners luck, or what Coelho describes as the principle of favourability: on the universe & successĪ concept that comes up a lot in the book is this idea of leaning into the universe. Then, lean into and begin to trust the universe. All you need is the vision, the dream, and to start taking small actions towards this dream, giving yourself small wins that prove you’re worthy and capable. You don’t need to have everything figured out, you don’t need to have a full plan from a - b, or to have mastered your craft. Instead, lean into your dreams, because it’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting. “Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.” What were your hopes and dreams as a kid? At what point did you stop believing these were possible? Was it because of something someone said or did? Or did you start to filter yourself based on societal norms? Think about where this might have manifested in your own life. But as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their personal legend.” They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. “At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. And, if they do inspire you, I’d definitely recommend reading the book in its entirety.Ĭoelho writes about the fact that everyone, when they are young, knows what their personal legend is. The book “invites us to live out our dreams, embrace the uncertainty of life, and rise to meet our own unique destiny.”Īs many of my intentions for 2020 revolve around following my dreams and stepping into my higher self, this book offered a beautiful approach to exploring life lessons and diving deeper into self-discovery, and it’s exactly what I needed to read for some additional guidance on my personal journey.īelow are some of my key takeaways and favourite quotes from the book, which I hope are helpful for providing some guidance and inspiration for you as you aspire to fulfill your own personal legend. Along his journey he meets several people who show him the beautiful workings of the world, and how when you step into your personal legend or journey, things will align and the universe will conspire to help you achieve it. The Alchemist follows the story of Santiago, a shepherd boy who yearns to travel. I rarely read novels anymore, seemingly always searching for another self-help or business book where I can learn, be inspired, and take action steps from, but this fable has given me the urge to begin leaning back into more fiction books, looking to discover wisdom amidst the pages and stories. The press has often used that pun to describe the sales success of the model. In Australia, the first-generation Qashqai carries the name Dualis from the Japanese market because Nissan worried Qashqai could be pronounced " cash cow". Nissan considered releasing the Chinese version as the CCUV (Compact Crossover Utility Vehicle). From the UK, the first-generation Qashqai was also exported to the Middle East and other overseas markets. The first-generation Qashqai sold more than 1.24 million units in Europe during its seven year production run. It received a five star Euro NCAP safety rating – the best ever adult occupant score. The Qashqai uses the same platform as the X-Trail. It is the first model to be styled by Nissan Design Europe in London, with engineering development led by Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. The car slots below the X-Trail in the Nissan range and partially replaces the conventional Primera and the smaller Almera. Codenamed P32L, Nissan said the car would cater to buyers who want a more dynamic design, but are not attracted to the large, aggressive nature of an SUV. It went on sale in February 2007, and Nissan aimed for more than 100,000 sales a year. First generation (J10 2006) įirst unveiled as a concept vehicle at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show, the first-generation Qashqai was globally presented at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. Nissan selected Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK as its manufacturing plant for the European market. While engineering work was done by Nissan's European Technical Centre (NTCE), a design proposal was put forward by Nissan Design Europe (NDE), which created the 2004 Qashqai concept.ĭuring final development, Nissan decided the Qashqai would serve as a replacement for both the Almera in the C-segment and Primera in the D-segment. The development was focused on creating a European-oriented vehicle with the desirability, practicality and versatility of an SUV but with the size, driving dynamics and running costs of a family hatchback. The development team eventually came up with the idea of a "mini- Murano" type of vehicle smaller than the X-Trail that would be positioned to compete with hatchback and saloons. In December 2002, the company concluded the planned model would not be as profitable and competitive as was required. It was projected to be larger, to compete with the SEAT Altea and Volkswagen Golf Plus. In early 2002, 25 European Nissan engineers travelled to the brand’s technical centre in Japan to start of a 12-month project to develop the successor of the Almera. The C-segment Almera, a slow-seller in Europe became a primary focus. When the Renault–Nissan Alliance was formed in 1999, Nissan's new COO Carlos Ghosn instructed the company to transform its product portfolio in Europe. Nissan named the vehicle after the Qashqai people, who live in mountainous Central and Southwestern Iran. The third and current generation was released in 2021. The second generation, which was released in 2014, was not sold in Japan and is badged as the Qashqai in all countries it is sold, except in the United States, where it is rebadged as the Nissan Rogue Sport. The first generation of the vehicle was sold under the name Nissan Dualis ( Japanese: 日産・デュアリス, Hepburn: Nissan Dyuarisu) in Japan and Australia, and Qashqai in other markets. The Nissan Qashqai ( / ˈ k æ ʃ k aɪ/) is a compact crossover SUV ( C-segment) developed and produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan since 2006.
